A NOTE FROM DOWN THE STREET

Hi, I'm Mark.
We live on Walnut.

An outage makes everything your problem at once: the sump pump, the food in the fridge, and keeping the house comfortable.

We have Base Power's home battery backup installed at our home on Walnut. We chose it because we wanted automatic backup without buying and maintaining the equipment ourselves. The lower electricity supply rate was part of the appeal, too.

I made this page for neighbors asking the same questions I did: What's the cost? How does it work? And what am I signing up for?

Here's how the deal works

THE QUESTION EVERYONE ASKS

How can the
installation
be $295?

Base becomes your electricity supplier and owns the battery, which it also uses to support the grid. That business model helps fund the backup service.

01

Backup that starts automatically.

When an outage hits, the battery can power your home without starting a generator. How long it lasts depends on its charge and what you're running.

02

A lower supply rate. Still one ComEd bill.

You switch electricity supply to Base; ComEd continues delivery and billing. Base currently advertises supply rates below ComEd's default Price to Compare. Compare supply rates separately from your total bill.

03

Base owns and maintains the battery.

Base earns revenue by using the battery to support the grid. That helps make the upfront cost possible. You pay for installation and electricity service; Base keeps ownership.

THE QUESTIONS I'D ASK

These are a neighbor's summaries. Base's current written offer and your agreements determine your terms.

Base's help center ↗
What's the cost — and do I buy the battery?

Base's currently advertised Illinois offer is a $295 one-time installation fee, no battery to buy, and $0 monthly battery membership fee. You enroll in Base electricity service; Base owns and maintains the battery.

You still pay for electricity. Additional work or a nonstandard installation can change costs; get your home's price in writing. Agreement commitments and any applicable cancellation charges are separate.

Base's installation and ongoing costs FAQ ↗
Do I still have ComEd?

ComEd remains your delivery utility and sends your bill. Base Retail becomes your electricity supplier. Compare the offered supply plan with your current plan, especially if you use hourly pricing or another supplier.

What could it power, and for how long?

Base lists 12–18 hours at average usage and up to 36 hours at reduced usage for its 39.2 kWh battery. Those are estimates. What you can run at once, and for how long, depends on the configuration, available charge, and your home's loads.

Have Base confirm your sump pump, refrigerator, and heating or cooling needs. The battery isn't guaranteed to be full when an outage starts, and backup availability isn't guaranteed.

What are the plan terms and cancellation options?

Base currently offers a 24-month Illinois electricity plan and a separate 12-year battery services agreement. If you move, an eligible buyer can take over the battery agreement through Base's transfer process.

Early cancellation generally includes a $500 charge when Base recovers the battery; exemptions and other obligations apply. Have Base confirm the terms for your home before enrolling.
